PRESS RELEASE

Fiji, through the Attorney-General and Minister for Communications, Mr Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was represented at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain last week.

The GSMA (Groupe Speciale Mobile Association) Ministerial Programme began on Monday (15/02/10) and ended on Thursday (18/02/10) with Fiji being the only country from the South Pacific that attended the meeting.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that the meeting was important and issues raised would benefit Fiji given its strategic location in the South Pacific region.

Discussions centred around the Green Agenda or how the global mobile industry could assist in promoting sustainability on a national and international level. Speakers also highlighted the importance of an efficient and equitable spectrum management system as the issue of spectrum management was at the center of any robust mobile industry.  Issues of infrastructure sharing, cyber security and the use of mobiles for the furtherance of Government initiatives in the socio-economic activities of citizens were also discussed.

Other issues discussed included mobile’s role as an enabler for cross-sector growth and innovation, consumer empowerment via the mobile internet, spectrum for mobile broadband and the spectrum policy in the Africa and Asia Pacific regions.

The GSMA is an organisation whose members are leaders in mobile technology around the world.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was accompanied by the Telecommunications Authority of Fiji Chairperson, Ms Mere Rakuita.
